RBS Six Nations Rugby: Six Memorable Moments

This year’s Six Nations rugby union tournament is in full swing as England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy battle it out on the pitch in a bid to become champion!

As there aren’t any fixtures this weekend, we thought we’d keep the momentum going and offer rugby fans a Six Nations fix by choosing our top six most memorable moments from the tournament’s history.

But first, here’s a montage to get you into the Six Nations spirit…

1903: In a match against England, an injury-stricken Wales called on the services of emergency prop Jehoida Hodges, who casually pulled off a hat trick of tries to steer the team to a 21-5 victory.

1965: In one of the most dramatic championship matches in history, with a second left of injury time to spare, England winger Andy Hancock raced 85 metres and weaved through a barrage of Scottish tacklers to level the score at 3-3, denying the team of their first victory at England’s HQ since 1938.

1991: During a high-octane clash at Twickenham, an on-form Philippe Saint Andre scored what commentator Nigel Starmer-Smith described as the most ‘sensational try the stadium has ever seen’. Despite an incredible feat of French team work and individual athleticism, France still lost the game 21-19.

1999: In the final day of the tournament, Wales played England at a packed Wembley during the completion of the Cardiff stadium. In the dying moments, Wales’ Scott Gibbs grabbed the ball in a line-out move in England’s 22 to get the team in motion, which ended in an easy conversion and a last minute victory.

2000: In their first ever championship match, Italy stunned Scotland with a 34-20 victory at the Stadio Flaminio under the cool and calm guidance of fly-half Diego Dominguez, who racked up rather impressive 29 points during the game.

2012: In a highly entertaining and furious clash between Ireland and Wales, a somewhat struggling Welsh side found one last burst of inspiration and composed a comeback of six points in the final five minutes to steal a 23-21 victory.

If this has got you all fired up and you want to get a real insight into the thrills and spills of international rugby, why not try out our insightful Tour of Twickenham? Or if this doesn’t float your boat, we also have a choice of other great famous stadium tours which are sure to entertain.
