Five Monumental Brands Hatch Moments

Brand’s Hatch is one of Britain’s best loved race circuit’s, and rightly so.

Since staging its first race meeting in 1932, this illustrious circuit has seen plenty of high-octane racing action and as we’re getting geared up for our exclusive SummerSpeed event taking place at Brands Hatch this August, we thought we’d share some of those magical moments with you. Please also read our interview with RLD’s very own Jon Abbey about the Brands Hatch circuit.

1952: This adrenaline-fuelled race season saw the emergence of Stewart Nigel Lewis-Evans, an English racing driver who, during his career, took part in 14 Formula One World Championship Grand Prix’s. In addition to that, British driver Les Leston raised the Brands Hatch lap record to 71.15 mph (50.6 seconds) – the first time 70 mph had ever been exceeded.

1968: Swiss racing legend Jo Siffert won his first ever British Grand Prix in a dramatic race to the finish line. Jo, driving his Rob Walker/Jack Durlacher Lotus 49B, spent most the race battling for third place with Chris Amon’s Ferrari, before finding a sudden burst of inspiration and claiming victory in the final lap.

1983: Lewisham born racer and medical doctor John Palmer made his Formula One debut at Brands Hatch, racing for the Williams team in the European Grand Prix. He went onto win the 1984 1000 km of Brands Hatch, as part of the World Endurance Championships.

2005: In September of 2005, Brands Hatch had the privilege of opening the very first A1GP (known as the ‘World Cup of Motorsport’) – an auto racing series where drivers represent their nation, rather than their team or themselves as individuals. Although the A1GP was short lived due to financial issues, it did enjoy a few very successful years and provided some of the most exciting moments in the history of professional motor racing.

2011: In one of the most breathtaking races in Brands Hatch history, Tommy Hill took victory in the British Superbike Championship by a mere 0.06 seconds. After a high-octane clash of the titans, Hill managed to get ahead at the very last corner and cross the finish line just before American biker, John ‘Hopper’ Hopkins.
